Amanda Beresford (PhD 2020) has published an essay, entitled “‘Bursting Out’ of the Harem: The Afterlife of Picasso’s Femmes” (“‘Ausbrechen’ aus dem Harem. Das Nachleben von Picassos Femmes”) in the catalogue of the exhibition “Picasso & Les Femmes d’Alger,” showing at the Museum Berggruen in Berlin, Germany from May 7 to August 8, 2021. The exhibition focuses on the series of 15 paintings and more than 100 drawings and prints Picasso made in 1954-55, inspired by Delacroix’s 1834 work Les Femmes d’Alger dans leur appartement in the Louvre. Version N, the fourteenth in the series and Picasso’s favorite, is in the Kemper Museum’s collection; it is on loan to the exhibition. The catalogue, which includes earlier published texts on the paintings by the eminent critic Leo Steinberg and the Algerian author Assia Djebar, is published in German, French and English by Hirmer Verlag, Berlin.
