PhD Candidate Lacy Murphy has been awarded the Donna Lee Bowen Travel Award to fund her travel to Tunis, Tunisia where she will present at the annual conference for the American Institute for Maghrib Studies (AIMS) on May 11-12, 2023. This year’s theme, Remade by War: New Perspectives on Postwar North Africa, will examine how war shaped the decolonization movements that intensified across North Africa after 1945. Lacy’s presentation will discuss posters and other ephemera released in Algeria that targeted Muslim viewers and emphasized the importance of Muslim opinion in North Africa during World War II. While in Tunisia, Lacy also plans to conduct research related to her work at the Saint Louis Art Museum where she is currently completing the Mark S. Weil and Joan M. Hall Professional Development Fellowship. During her fellowship, Lacy has been researching the Museum’s small but impressive collection of late-eighteenth, nineteenth-, and twentieth-century textiles from Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia. She is looking forward to traveling to several important sites of textile production while in Tunisia.
