Introduction to Asian Art

ART HISTORY AND ARCHAEOLOGY 111

Beginning around the time of the Buddha (c.500 B.C.E.) and continuing to the present, this course introduces the most significant works of art and architecture from across all Asia. During our five weeks together, we will explore beliefs in the afterlife, expressions of power and piety, cross-cultural encounters, and contemporary global Asia, all given visual form in Asian art. By considering both historic and modern works of art, we will examine the continuing dialogue between past and present in Asian art today.
